Where did Lorem Ipsum originally come from?
Lorem Ipsum has a surprisingly long history. It comes from “De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” — a philosophical work written by the Roman statesman and philosopher Cicero in 45 BC.
The standard Lorem Ipsum passage used today:
“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit…”
…is actually a scrambled and altered excerpt from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero’s original Latin text. The scrambling was done deliberately so the text would appear language-like but carry no readable meaning.
It was first used in the 1500s by an unknown printer who scrambled a passage of Cicero to use as type specimen filler. It has remained the industry standard placeholder text for over 500 years — and is still the go-to choice for designers and developers worldwide today.
